A Glimpse at Republicans’ Contribution to Inflationary Spending

Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R) stated in his podcast on May 27, 2021, that the Biden Administration was causing destabilizing inflation by their unchecked spending, holding that “we are paying more for everyday goods because Joe Biden and the liberals spend money like there’s no consequences to spending money”. However, Mr. Reschenthaler voted to pass both the Families First Act (text for H.R. 6201; roll call, here) and the CARES Act (text for H.R. 748; roll call, here)  in the Spring of 2020, which, according to recent U.S. Treasury data, helped bring total spending for that fiscal year alone to $6.55 Trillion, resulting in a deficit (overspending) of $3.13 Trillion.

The truth is that a Congressman’s vote embodies more of his conviction than does his podcast

In another podcast on June 22, 2021, Mr. Reschenthaler proceeded to point out how President Nixon wasn’t a conservative because, for example, he required employers pay for health insurance and then subsidized them if they couldn’t afford this new expense. The peculiar irony of this criticism is seen in the Families First Act, wherein Mr. Reschenthaler voted to require employers to offer extended paid sick leave and then subsidized those payments via tax credits – not to mention the extended unemployment payments, paycheck protection program, and other egregious spending measures of the CARES Act which Mr. Reschenthaler supported.

the spending under conservative Republicans continues to escalate, and the costs to the American people are real and damaging

We are often presented with new “conservative” Congressmen who are said to “be a good person”, but turn out to be, in Mr. Reschenthaler’s own words, “just like any woke leftist”. I find it regrettable that these leaders posture themselves as defenders of liberty and economic stability, but almost immediately act to undermine those two treasured notions of the American People. The truth is that a Congressman’s vote embodies more of his conviction than does his podcast – and by his vote we understand that hypocrisy is still very much at home with Mr. Reschenthaler and the Republican Party.

Perspective:

The “conservative” faction within our political system has for decades been conservators of this notion: “When we spend money and burden Americans with more taxes, it’s Ok; but when the liberals spend money, they are recklessly ruining this Country.” In then end, however, the spending under conservative Republicans continues to escalate, and the costs to the American people are real and damaging.
